Everything Everywhere All at Once is a 2022 American absurdist comedy-drama film written and directed by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert (collectively known as "Daniels"), who produced it with Anthony and Joe Russo. The plot centers on a Chinese-American immigrant (played by Michelle Yeoh) who, while being audited by the IRS, discovers that she must connect with parallel universe versions of herself to prevent a powerful being from destroying the multiverse.
The film received widespread critical acclaim for its imagination, visual effects, humor, direction, editing, acting, and handling of themes such as existentialism, nihilism, and Asian-American identity. As of January 24, 2023, the film has received numerous accolades, such as being called by both the National Board of Review and the American Film Institute as one of the top ten films of 2022. Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan received Golden Globes for their performances at the 80th Golden Globes, with the latter also winning Best Supporting Actor at the 28th Critics' Choice Awards. The film has also received the most nominations at the 95th Academy Awards with 11 nominations.
The film made Oscar history with its nominations across multiple categories: Yeoh is the first Asian woman nominated in the Best Actress category.[a] Stephanie Hsu's nominations in the Best Supporting Actress category, alongside Hong Chau's nomination for The Whale, marked the first time two Asian actresses were nominated in that category in the same year.
Accolades
Notes
- ^ Yeoh is the second Asian actress but first actress to identify with their Asian heritage to be nominated in the category, as past nominee Merle Oberon hid her Eurasian heritage throughout her career.
